Obituary of Verna Sloan

Verna Wynema “Nema” Sloan, age 88, of Coweta departed this life on Friday, September 26, 2008 at Broken Arrow Nursing Home. She was born on February 8, 1920 in McAlester, Oklahoma to William and Amy (Webb) Salmon. Nema and George W. Sloan were united in marriage on November 5, 1938 in Eufaula, Oklahoma and he later preceded her in death. In 1956, she and George moved to Coweta from Locust Grove. Nema had worked as manager at the Emporium for ten years. She also owned and operated Four Seasons Resale. Nema graduated from McAlester High School in 1938 and she attended Oklahoma State University for two years. She was a member of the Emmanuel Southern Baptist Church in Coweta. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, computers, guitars, and bowling. She was also an avid scrabble player and she loved watching birds. She is survived by three sons, Kenneth Michael Sloan and his wife, Mary, of Eufaula, Oklahoma, William Randall Sloan of Semi Valley, California, and Rodger W. Sloan and his wife, Elizabeth, of Owasso, Oklahoma; three daughters, Margaret A Dale and her husband, Roy, of Coweta, Oklahoma, Linda K. Hastings and her husband, Chuck, of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Alice G. Barron and her husband, Michael, of Coweta, Oklahoma; three brothers, Robert Salmon of Norman, Oklahoma, Don Salmon of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and Jim Salmon of Jacksonville, Florida; two sisters, Jo Forkner of Muskogee, Oklahoma and Barbara Jean Brown of Fontana, Kansas; one daughter-in-law, Lisa Sloan of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; 19 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, Stephen D. Sloan, and two brothers. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 2, 2008 at Emmanuel Southern Baptist Church in Coweta with Rev. Brett Rogers officiating. Committal prayers and interment will follow at Vernon Cemetery. Arrangements and services are under the direction of Wright Funeral Home. Casket Bearers are the grandsons, Rick Dale, Kenneth Sloan, Terry Hamersley, Charles Hastings, Jr., Scott Hastings, and Spencer Hastings.
