Obituary of Carl McCullen
On September 24, 1941 in Coweta, Oklahoma, “Sonny” Carl McCullen, was born to Jimmy Lee and Pinkie Redricks Taylor.
His love and acceptance for Jesus Christ came at an early age at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, where he was destined to serve as a Deacon for 30 plus years. You could always set your clock by seeing his truck at Mt. Calvary for Sunday school and bible study.
Known by friends and family as “Sonny”, Carl embodied the generosity and kindness of Christ in everything he set out to do. He loved people and was always willing to help anyone in need. His smile and laughter was infectious to everyone he came in contact with. He was a man of integrity, honesty and character so you never had to wonder about his heart or his intentions.
Carl was never afraid of hard work, at the age of 19, he became an employee of Acme Brick Company, and later Patterson Steel also known as Valmont Industries. Carl retired in 2008 after 45 years of service. Upon his retirement, he received a one day “paid” suspension for never missing a day of work.
Carl embraced and enjoyed life. He took pleasure in being with family and friends, plus two of his favorite pastimes, fishing and of course, dominoes, where it must be noted that he has duly whipped more than a few of us.
Above all else, Carl’s love for his family was a testament to his love for Christ. Left to celebrate his life and memory is his wife of 46 years, Dortha McCullen; his children: Clarissa (Lady) Jones - Tulsa, Isom (Cindy) Baker - Henryetta, Robert (Marie) Jones - Massachusetts, Bobby Ray Baker – Broken Arrow, LaShawn Baker-Tulsa and Lillian (Stephen) Etter -Tulsa; his beloved sister Betty Delousier, and his nieces Patricia (Juan) Delousier, Claudette Delousier, Sharon Delousier, and Tameka (Walter) Doyle; his cousin and fishing buddy, Pam Walker Dillard; thirteen grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Other extended family he loved and cherished include life-long friends Jesse and Jerry Edwards, Tommy Harris, Maurice and Wanda Atkins, and Cecil Terry.
On April 1, 2017 at 2pm “Sonny” Carl McCullen, left his earthly home and family to reunite with his Heavenly Father. Carl is preceded in death by his father and mother Jimmy Lee and Pinkie Taylor, a host of family and friends, and his two special fur-babies, Coco and Dottie. He leaves his love to sustain us but we who loved him will certainly miss his smile, his laughter and that beautiful bald head. May he Rest in Peace.
