Obituary of Mattie L. Smith

Mattie L. Smith, age 88, resident of Coweta went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday afternoon, March 16, 2017 at St. John Medical Center in Tulsa, OK. She was born on December 23, 1928 to James Oscar and Blanche Maybell (Harp) Benson in Wagoner County, OK. Mattie was also known as "GranMattie". She and Gilbert B. Smith were united in marriage in October 1964. She was a devoted homemaker who loved caring for her family. Mattie enjoyed genealogy, quilting, sewing painting and cooking. She was a member of the Hidden Valley Homemakers Group, Daughters of the American Revolution, Eastern Star and the Broken Arrow Genealogical Society. Mattie was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Smith, her parents, James Oscar and Blanche Maybell Benson, 2 sons, Gary Foster and Gilbert Smith, Jr., 2 brothers, Dan Benson and Jimmy Benson, 3 sisters, Wanda Edmunson, Perkie Jantzen and Faye Watkins. Mattie is survived by 5 children, Clayton Foster of Allen, TX, Bonita Hunt of Georgia, Patricia Van Nest of Oklahoma City, OK, Robin Smith of Oklahoma City, OK and John Smith of Oklahoma City, OK; 13 grandchildren, Matt, Katie, William, Ricky, Linda, David, Sandy, Kim, Kelly, Jurl, Jennifer, Trey and Dina; and numerous great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Viewing will be from 12-6 PM on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at Wright-Brown Family Funeral Home with the family present from 4-6 PM. Services celebrating Mattie's life will be at 11 AM on Monday, March 20, 2017 at Wright-Brown Family Funeral Home Chapel in Coweta, OK with Pastor Bob Logsdon officiating. Burial will follow in Vernon Cemetery in Coweta, OK. Pallbearers are Matt Foster, David Childress, Bob Billue, Jeff Riddle, Scott Davis and Lonnie Calfy.
