I posted recently posted this on Facebook in Kiefer Class of 79.
I know most of you growing up will remember Couch Scott. He's been on my mind alot that's why I'm telling this story. Besides him being a teacher, a gym coach and taught drivers Ed, he also saved one life during gym class, MINE!
Rhonda Barnes will remember because of her he was able to do this. My kids know this story because they were never allowed to have jaw breakers growing up.
After laughing about something us girls were all talking about at the beginning of gym class while sitting on the bleachers I started laughing and I inhaled a small jawbreaker I had in my mouth. After not being able to dislodge it and embarressed I turned and went into the room where the girls were changing. By that time and not being able to breath I fell to the floor and crawled back out to the gym floor and knew I was going to die. My lips had already started turning blue and was gasping so hard that it wouldn't have been much longer before I passed out. Rhonda literally grabbed Couch Scott from where he was sitting to where I was. I think I was about 13 or 14. I was on the gym floor and he grabbed me around the waist jerked me up (he preformed the heimlech maneuver) and the jaw breakers went flying. I was never so happy just to draw a breath. And I'm sure he was too.
Just remember teachers work hard everyday to help kids learn and stay safe.
Thank you Couch Scott for being my Angel!!!
I am just waiting to Thank him again someday in HEAVEN!

Dear Scott Family,
I was so sad to see that Mr. Scott had passed. I had him as my teacher at Porter High School until I graduated in 1986. He was my favorite teacher. He encouraged us, inspired us, rode us hard, and made us work. He also taught us that learning can be fun. He also helped me personally and encouraged me to go to college. When I was still a senior, I was a concurrent college student (unheard of then; it's common now), and he wrote my letter of recommendation. Later, in 1987, he and Bonnie even attended my wedding.
I put college on hold for a while and tackled life. In 2007, I finally finished my college degree, and one of my first thoughts was, "I wish Mr. Scott knew I finally finished my degree." When my son started high school, I thought to myself, "I hope my son has some great teachers like Mr. Scott." He thought education was important, and he was often a stand-in parent for many a student that needed it.
A generation of students is completely devastated right now at his passing. I wish I had known sooner so that I could have attended his funeral, Hopefully, this note will let you, his family, know how much he meant to not only numerous students but to me personally.
Godspeed, Mr. Scott.
Michelle

I would like to give my heartfelt condolences to Mr. Scott's family. He was a wonderful teacher at Porter High School. I remember fondly of a debate amongst us boys in class one day of who we thought was the fastest and Mr. Scott said "I bet I can beat most you in a 60yd dash". We almost fell out of our desks laughing. He promptly took us out on the football field and easily out ran all but two us. We were stunned! Lol He will be missed.

I'm sure the family and friends of Mr Scott already know what a wonderful man he was but I wanted to take time to tell you just how much this great man meant to me and so many others. He gave me so much valuable advice that I still apply to my life daily and attribute to him. His guidance as a teacher helped shape my moral compass and strengthened my determination to be an honest and respectable person. This in turn lead me to have a career in Law Enforcement and to try and make the world around me a better place. It has been 30 years since he was my teacher and I still think of him and the wonderful person he was. He used to carve little totem faces into small nubs of chalk and they were coveted by all of his students. I still have mine and I treasure it. I'm sorry to hear of his passing and I just wanted you to know how much he meant to me.

Mr. Scott was my Jr. High science teacher in Porter. Our entire class would surely say he was one of our favorites. In fact, one year we all pitched in and bought him a birthday cake that said, "Happy Birthday, old Goat!" This was an inside joke and the name was certainly given in love. He made sure we knew the difference between ignorant and stupid, and assured us than none of us were stupid. I think of him often. To the family, "thank you" for sharing him with us. He made a difference.
